Drums at Sunrise

Drums at Sunrise… I loved the way Billy Cobham segued between compositions on his first solo records in the ‘70s, phenomenal drum expressions and buildups that exploded into “Stratus” on “Spectrum,” for instance. Plus, I spent a lot of time in Key West… sat reverently more than a few times by the ocean at sunrise, just listening to the waves from the tide roll in with continuous percussive force… this tracked in one take, just me laying down what came to me through tom toms and a memory of waking up one morning on a sandy section of rocks near the Southernmost Point with the tide rolling in on a breezy groove by the light of the day’s first sliver of sun on the ocean’s horizon… or something like that.
